  18. <p>     "It's rare that a film can be put to such a practical use,"
  19. said actor Daniel Day-Lewis (A Room with a View). He was
  20. referring to My Left Foot, in which he plays painter Christy
  21. Brown, who had cerebral palsy. Last week Day-Lewis, 32, visited
  22. Washington to back legislation banning discrimination against
  23. the disabled. The actor knows his subject: his late stepfather
  24. was paralyzed. "He did not want to be a burden to anyone,"
  25. Day-Lewis says. "But Christy Brown insisted on making noise."
